Matteotti’s places
Matteotti’s public memory has had different forms and phases.
During the fascist regime, monuments sprang up especially abroad, promoted by international socialism.
After 1945, there were many places and streets dedicated to him in Italy as well; and then the plaques and busts erected in his honor.
Relatively few monuments, on the other hand, concentrated mainly on the occasion of the 50th death anniversary.
Then a long silence, with sporadic titling.
Finally, new attention related to centenarians in recent years.
In this section of the portal we intend to map and make known the main places of Matteottian memory: museums, statues, plaques, toponyms and in general signs of his presence in public space, not only in Italy.
Pointing out their characteristics and reconstructing their history.
In the belief that it is important to link a name to a face and an idea.
And that the Matteotti affair and memory are also a prism through which to read the dynamics ( and difficulties) of Italian public memory.
